The Eye Scheme
The Canine Health Scheme (CHS), established by the British Veterinary Association (BVA), the Royal Kennel Club and the International Sheep Dog Society (ISDS), works with expert veterinary surgeons to offer dog health screening schemes including eye testing. This scheme allows breeders and owners to screen their dogs for a range of inherited diseases, helping them to make informed and responsible breeding decisions. Anyone planning to breed dogs should carry out clinical eye examinations for both parents.
South Downs Veterinary Referrals are pleased to offer canine eye health testing to existing Arun Veterinary Group and external clients.
Our eye examinations are carried out by our expert veterinary ophthalmologist Helen Appelboam BVetMed BSc CertVOphthal MRCVS.
Our eye screening clinics are held at Arun Vets in Storrington, West Sussex.

Please note that all prices are inclusive of VAT and include a certificate.
When should I screen my dog?
-Adult dogs: In general, the best age for the first eye test is after the dog has reached one year of age and before it is used for breeding. Tests should be carried out within 12 months before mating.
– Senior dogs: a final examination should take place in all dogs that have been used for breeding when they have reached 8 years of age.
How long does an eye score take?
gonioscopy. One hour is allocated for litter screenings.
Do I need a referral from my vet?
Does my dog need to be Kennel Club registered?

When will I get my results?
certificate, giving you a copy with the results on and sending another copy to the
CHS team.
– If your dog is registered with the UK Kennel Club, the results will also be
published on the Kennel Club website.
What is a gonioscopy?
inherited painful and blinding disease known as primary glaucoma. We recommend that
the following breeds have the added gonioscopy test at their eye score appointment as
they are pre-disposed to this condition:

Can I appeal the result?
Eye examination appeals: Any appeal against the results must be lodged with the CHS team within 30 days of the examination.
